It took a move across the country and a pandemic to crystallize the Ancient Waves into a bright new force on the Twin Cities music scene. They are best known for their crisp blend of catchy Indie and psychedelic rock instrumentation around frontman Jarad Miles’s stellar songcraft. The talented four-piece was originally formed by Miles alongside bassist Andy Nail and drummer Ed Draper after meeting at an environmental non-profit where they worked. After playing a string of shows in early 2020 they went hiatus due to the pandemic shutdown. After going on hiatus during the pandemic in 2020 due to the pandemic In 2021, after a break during the pandemic, they were joined by lead guitarist Andrew Berg.
By the time Miles reunited the band in late 2021 after their pandemic-induced hiatus, he had a new solo album to show for it. Standing Upon This Array, his first full-length in nine years, was released in June of 2022 and its opening title-track recently described by The Current’s Youa Vang as “... a soundscape for his distinctly unique voice... Instruments mesh together, shimmer, and shine, and the listener can only marvel at the loveliness of it all.”
Backed by the Ancient Waves, Miles is set to release an inspiring new single, Burn Your Bright Stars of Love on August 30th. and begin recording a new album with the Ancient Waves. Fortunately, the Ancient Waves continue to inject their psychedelic rock- and funk-infused grooves to buoy Miles’s evocative voice and mesmerize audiences.
Following Miles’s evocative and introspective 2022 solo album, Standing Upon This Array, the Ancient Waves have released five singles ahead of a Spring 2026 full length release. As a live band, Ancient Waves continues to grow and build momentum by injecting buoyant grooves to Miles’s songs to mesmerize audiences.
Since 2019, Miles has led the eclectic and expansive Ancient Waves through thick and thin, doling out the fervor and mystique of a love-sick sea captain to songs about the wonders and dismays of the universe.
